The criminalisation and repression of Social Movements
In the last decade social movements resist against the neoliberal capitalist globalization. Therefore governments increasingly use internal security and (anti-)terrorism frameworks to crack down on such movements in Europe and elsewhere. Analysis of these restrictive policies; Discussion of alternatives, strategies and collaboration to counter the growing authoritarianism in Europe.

In the seminar we will hear and discuss about different cases of repression against social and political movements and activists. Among them the protests against the G8 summit in Germany in 2007, the protest against the NATO summit in Bucharest in 2008, the arrest and detention of ten animal rights activists in Austria this summer, the struggle of Ungdomshuset in Denmark, an anti-terror investigation against antimilitarist activists and researchers in Germany.
We want to discuss similarities and differences, look at new developments in cases of repression against political activists after 9-11, especially the use of anti-terror legislation and/or cases against mass mobilisations or struggles for squatted houses/areas/autonomous zones. One goal is to build and strengthen networks dealing with these issues.
Details of some of the speakers:
Corinna Genschel, is active in the comittee for fundamental rights and democracy, a German civil right organisation (www.grundrechtekomitee.de), I also work as a liasion person between the Left party (in parliament) and social movements.
One activity the comittee is doing on a regular basis, is what we call "demonstration monitoring", basically a monitoring of civil rights violations by state institutions and police practices.
On the panel I will report from that point of view on the policing, repression and criminalization of the counter G8 summit activitites as well as report on new state strategies of "handling" huge political events on the one hand, and using these events for pushing for new laws, state "security" systems.
