When Colombia bombed a gerill camp inside Ecuador a regional crisis broke out. The colombia right-wing government was alone and it became clear that the neighbouring countries had little confidence in the countrys president Álvaro Uribe. To the worlds surprise the bombings took place in the midst of ongoing negociations with the left-wing gerilla group FARC, Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, for avrelease of hostages. In the centre of the events where the colombian senador Piedad Córdoba who withe the help of venezuelas president Hugo Chavez had mediated a release of several hostages. In spite of her accomplishments Córdoba have been threatened and persecuted in Colombia. She has formulated harsh critic against the politics of Uribe and has paid a high price for her engagement for peace and justice in Colombia. Colombia is the bad example of Latin America. Social reforms are absent and the USE implements a militarsation that threats the colombian peaople as well as the entire continent. When Ecuador anounced it will close the US military base in the country, it was anounced that a new would be built in Colombia who allready host 3 US military bases. A seminar about what happens beyond the headlines in the long lasting conflict in Colombia. Is there a hope for peace? What is the situation for the social movements? How is Latin America affected by the threat that the US backed militarization of Colombia means for the region?
