Thematic structure

The workshops, seminars, meetings and other activities in the final program will be structured along several thematic areas. This both in order to make the program more easy to access and understand, as well as to facilitate mobilization for the forum, the work with the program itself and the activities during the forum.

Until December there was an open process to suggest themes for the ESF in Malmö. The incoming proposals (all in all around 70) resulted in a proposal for themes by the program group of the Nordic Organizing Committee at the EPA (European Preparatory Assembly) in Istanbul in December 2007. This proposal, together with the complete list of the incoming proposal for themes, was further developed into a new proposal by the European program group and finalized into a thematic structure during the EPA in Berlin in February 2008. At a programme meeting in Malmö in April, a tenth theme was added to incorporate crossthematic issues and discussions on movements and the future of the global justice movement, since theses proposals didn't realy fit under the nine themes.

The final thematic sturcture for the fifth ESF i Malmö constists of ten general themes and one main headline:

Making another Europe possible!

East and West together, building alliances for struggles and alternatives

  1. Working for social inclusion and social rights – welfare, public services and common goods for all
  2. Working for a sustainable world, food sovereignity, environmental and climate justice
  3. Building a democratic and rights based Europe, against ”securitarian” policies. For participation, openness, equality, freedom and minority rights
  4. Working for equality and rights, acknowledging diversities, against all forms of discrimination. For feminist alternatives against patriarchy
  5. Building a Europe for a world of justice, peace and solidarity – against war, militarism and occupations
  6. Building labour strategies for decent work and dignity for all – against precarity and exploitation
  7. Economic alternatives based on peoples needs and rights, for economic and social justice
  8. Democratizing knowledge, culture, education information and mass media
  9. Working for a Europe of inclusiveness and equality for refugees and migrants – fighting against all forms of racism and discrimination
  10. New theme: cross-thematic. Social movements, the state and future of global justice movement.
